Quiet and calm, Hyro is not usually bothered by much. Normally he is too preoccupied with keeping track of Connor's emotional state to be worried about other people, though he will gladly try to cheer up someone who is clearly distraught or sad. That being said, he is rather timid and skittish around strangers and people who are being loud. He cares quite a lot for people in general, and will go out of his way to be helpful. Generally patient as a whole, he is especially so when dealing with small kids. Being highly attuned to sensing the emotions of those around him has its downfalls though, as he himself is rather overly emotional and will cry over seemingly trivial things. His duty being to be emotional support, he doesn't seek out support from others when he does cry, though he gladly accepts it if offered.

◈ He has a habit of climbing up on people he likes so he can perch on their shoulder[break]
◈ Always eager to wear his blue bandana signifying his training as a service Pokemon, despite Connor repeatedly trying to hide it
[break][break]
[break]
His eyes are a vivid and brilliant blue in color, with a calm and curious look to them
[break][break]
A bit on the scrawny side for his species, what he lacks in physical strength he makes up for in sheer adorable charm. Immediately obvious is the striking red color of his fur, accented by deeper blacks than Riolu normally display. Outside of that, his red fur is noticeably longer than normal, giving him a bit of a scruffy appearance. Despite this, he is exceptionally soft to the touch, especially after given a thorough brushing.
[break][break]
[break]
Born to a private breeder, it was soon apparent that the odd colored Riolu had a natural leaning toward being caring and compassion to those displaying negative emotions. So he was put into training to better hone that leaning into a useful skillset. His compassion was encouraged enthusiastically, and over the few years of training he gradually understood that it was going to be his job to help one person in particular with whatever negative emotions plagued them. Over the course of his training it was clear he was quite eager to please and picked up on the training regime spectacularly.
[break][break]
Once he turned five, he had finished the training and graduated with spectacular performances. Rewarded with a blue bandana to designate him as a service Pokemon, he wore it around his neck full of pride. It wasn’t long before the canine found himself being shipped off to another part of the region, on his way to finally put his training to use. He was excited and eager to meet the person that needed his aide, having gotten an understanding that whoever he ended up with would be giving him a name.
[break][break]
It was clear upon his arrival who this person would be. A white haired teen with red eyes whose aura was just so full of pain and sadness. Immediately rushing over to him, he hugged firmly to the teen’s leg, wanting to get rid of that pain. The boy seemed less than enthused by this, leaving the Riolu somewhat confused as to why he wasn’t being responsive to his efforts. He was determined though, it was his job after all, so he persistently kept at it.
[break][break]
The next few years seemed to fly by, his efforts to cheer up Lucius falling flat at every turn. It was frustrating, but there was no way he was giving up on this kid, even if he hadn’t given him a name yet. No matter how much he was ignored or shoved aside, he refused to leave. The fact Lucius needed someone was obvious, and none of the humans in his life seemed to be any help, so still the little red jackal refused to abandon the one he thought of as a friend. The bad habits Lucius got into only served to further his convictions – and his worry, the pain driving his actions obvious to his empathic abilities. Besides, he was fed and housed all the while, so he was sure Lucius cared about him at least a little bit.
[break][break]
A day finally came when Lucius decided to go back to his home town and confront his parents. As always, he refused to leave the young man’s side, traveling to the barren region with just as much eagerness as he always had. The encounter between the two men was… tense. The harsh words and shouting they threw at each other worried him greatly. Not for his sake, but he worried how it would affect Lucius’ near constant feelings of pain and sadness.
[break][break]
Before he knew it, the two were back in Unova. Things were different though. Lucius changed his name to Connor – which he agreed suited him far better as a name – and got an actual job. They moved into an actual apartment instead of staying at other people’s homes, and while it always felt somewhat cold and empty, the Riolu did his best to keep a bright and cheery attitude like always. By now he had grown to care about his friend a great deal, and the fact he still was in so much pain made him sad.
[break][break]
And then Connor’s emotional state got worse. His bad habits escalated, and then… he started turning his attention toward the canine. At first he was utterly confused by the shouting, wondering if he had done something wrong to warrant it. Gradually it came to be the norm, though he did not welcome it, always somewhat fearful when he tried to approach Connor. He refused to leave though. The pain his friend was still suffering through was so blatantly obvious, how could he leave? He kept trying to reach out to him despite all the shouting and harsh words, though far more timidly than he had in the past.
[break][break]
Eventually a night came where Connor’s mood was especially grim, and he shut himself away in his room. He could still sense the growing pain and storm of negative emotions he was going through, even through the door. Trying to shove his learned timidity aside, he was almost frantic as he managed to get into the room. The state his friend was in pained him greatly, and he rushed to the man’s side, ever so gently trying to coax him out of doing something terrible to himself. Finally, it seemed like he got through to his friend as he was pulled into a hug by a now sobbing Connor. He finally earned a name now as well it seemed.
[break][break]
Glad to finally see some progress in helping his friend feel better, the newly dubbed Hyro was ecstatic in the days to come. While his emotional state didn’t seem to improve, he did try to at least cut back on his drinking habit, and stopped shouting at Hyro entirely. Compared to the past few years, it was a huge improvement regardless. Despite some setbacks with medication mishaps and still lying to his therapist – if he could talk the jackal would have nipped that in the bud years back – he was still happy to finally be able to actually help his friend. Connor put even more effort into his painting, and even seemed to want Hyro around when he started going to contests to paint the contestants and their Pokemon.
[break][break]
Watching the contests was awe inspiring for the Riolu, and after a couple of failed attempts, he managed to timidly tug at Connor’s hand and pantomime the two of them signing up for one themselves. After talking it over with his therapist, he did sign the two of them up for a contest. Hyro was over the moon with excitement. Unfortunately, they lost, badly. Feeling utterly overwhelmed, he broke down crying at the results. He wanted to badly to win, sure it would make Connor at least somewhat glad. The gentle head patting his crying earned him surprised the small Pokemon, and he looked up to see his friend was actually smiling for once. His eyes were still sad, but still, a smile. Hyro wiped away his tears and figured that maybe losing wasn’t so bad.
[break][break]
Connor continued to sign them up for contests, and gradually the two got better at it, starting to actually land some wins in the local events they could join. Most of their competition was comprised of kids, but that never seemed to bother his friend, and eventually he quit his job and the two lived off the prize money and revenue from his continued painting. Watching Connor paint had always been fun, but it was also nice to see him keep making one beautiful piece after another. Hyro didn’t really have any skill for it, but even so, Connor would supply him with paints and paper to play with – which he happily did.
[break][break]
Moving to Sinnoh to attend SEA, Hyro didn’t really see the importance of it. It was nice to see Connor’s eagerness for it though, so he was glad to stick by him for support all the same. The only real downside was the physical classes. Everyone expected him to excel at it, but he wasn’t a fighter! Hyro had never been a fighter, so the battles utterly sucked. Even Connor had a hard time with the physical classes they had to take. They slogged through it though, and managed to pass the first year of courses, Connor signing them up for more of the dreaded physical conditioning classes offered over the summer. Second year was finally starting, so now they could see if those extra classes paid off.
