By the way, Lissy, a colleague of ours has a kid studying at SEA as well. We've arranged for you to meet him, one burgeoning researcher to another. You've met his father, Dr. Haruyama of Sylph Co. renown, briefly last summer, so I'm sure his son should be a very valuable peer for you to bounce things off. He'll be at....
The excerpt from the latest message from her parents, a seemingly innocuous arrangement of two talented researchers in related fields. Lis had already met a lot of really fascinating, intelligent minds in the Diamond college but she couldn't recall meeting a Haruyama (and her father was right in thinking the name alone would put her at ease--Dr. Haruyama was brilliant) so if there was ever going to be a surprise bout of socialization, perhaps this would be all right. She wasn't particularly familiar with the address, but then what addresses in this city was she familiar with? (The answer was not many, much to her flighty flying Pokemon's chagrin.) Luckily it wasn't a very far trek from the college so Lis resolved to just walk, knocking out two Pidgey with one stone (ugh, that saying) in being both social and exploring some more. There wasn't necessarily a lot of interest to her in the city itself; what field work could she do in alleys? (Well, what field work would she want to do in alleys, that is.) This way Nora got to see some new things and she got a new study buddy or something out of it. Right? Oh dear, her mind was racing. Was she nervous? This was just a colleague. So what if they weren't 20 years her senior. Nervous? Pfft. Silly.
Classes had been done for a few hours and Lis had had a light snack just in case this ended up being at some kind of cafe or something where she'd be expected to eat. There was a reservation in Dr. Haruyama's name according to her father, which told her that it was most likely a food place, right? She'd stuffed a few notebooks of her summarized research into her schoolbag for swapping with Haruyama Jr., because that's what you do at a research meet up, right? She also had her resume and curriculum vitae in a nice crisp folder in case that would be of interest to the boy. Well, man. Young man. Ugh, that made it sound weird to say. The scientist. Scientists were much easier to talk to than boys. Men. Either.
Lis made sure to give her father and mother a quick call before she headed out, just to confirm that she was actually going on this adventure. They sounded surprisingly thrilled--she hadn't been that bad at talking to people lately, had she? Maybe she needed to update them more on her social progress so they didn't take her to be such a pariah. After all, just the other day she'd had a fascinating conversation about microbial secretions in certain Bug Pokemon that was...No, no time to think about that right now. That wasn't the kind of thing they wanted to hear about anyway. They shooed her off the phone, reminding her to change out of her school uniform and mind her posture. (It wasn't that the uniform was comfortable or stylish. It was just...easier usually. Unless she was scrounging around in the field, of course. That's what hiking boots were for.)
5:30. All right, probably time to head over.
"Well, Nora? How do I look?" It was mostly rhetorical (she wasn't trying to dress up) but she gave a twirl with arms extended anyway, grinning for the little purple bat perched on her desk. The Noibat chirped appreciatively before alighting on her cardigan-clad shoulder. Nora was her barometer for when it was time to stretch, eat, drink, leave whatever room she was in, or sleep; the little dragon-bat was just the right amount of loving nag for the nineteen-year-old and it made them a good pair. So it stood to reason that if anyone's approval mattered, it'd be Nora's.
It was about a fifteen minute walk in leisurely mid-autumn weather that felt good even to someone as casually agoraphobic as Lis. The leaves crunched underfoot pleasantly and it smelled nice. The directions Lis was following led her through a pleasant more historical section of the city into what were becoming gradually nicer and nicer establishments that started to make her feel perhaps a little underdressed. Or, as she stopped at the address and realized, a lot.
After checking with Nora (who exchanged an unbothered glance that wasn't very helpful because her best friend was a Pokemon and not a talking human being who could help her with much in this situation and also didn't pay much to the differences between human establishment dress codes) Lis nervously entered and addressed the front of house hostess.
"U-Uhm...Excuse me, I...h-have a reservation. Hariyama. No, Haruyama, Dr. Haruyama, h-he reserved a table for me I believe?" "Ah, yes! Right this way, Ms. Pierre. Your date has not arrived yet." "D-! Oh no, it's just a-...Not a date....." Lis's protests as the woman led her to a table felt small. She felt small.
You can do this Lis. Stop. Breathe. Evaluate. This is a....unique....situation.....for.....studying social...mores and.............shoot. "This is all your fault, making me go out and do things!" She hissed to Nora before accepting a water from the waiter. To her credit, Nora had at least enough good sense to not look too smug about the whole affair.

[attr="class","wassupyoi1dangertxt"] "I can hardly believe it. Can you believe it Swirly? I know that I most certainly can not believe it I am so excited!" Yoizuki stood in front of the bathroom mirror, dull grey eyes finding a rare spark of life as his lips curled into a frail smile of excitement. Never would he think that his dear father would come all the way to Sinnoh just to visit him! His mother made it plainly clear that when he came home to visit that she was the main draw. He appreciated the warning that he should not hold his breath on him coming to visit at school, as it made this surprise visit all the more of a special treat! And the young giant was going to do absolutely everything in his power to make their meeting as pleasant as possible. Maybe if he did not humiliate or irritate him too much he would come back at least one more time before the year's end![break][break]
Elongated fingers endlessly fussed with his hair, tucking the strands behind his ear before pulling them back out and tucking them back in as part of an endless cycle. He had to look his very best, but he could not decide on what he should do with himself. "What do you think Swirly do I look better tucked or untucked?" The small ball let out an exhausted sigh at this, a look of concern on her face as she watched him anxiously fiddle with each and every aspect of his attire. Of course even for this special occasion he could not bring himself to wear anything but his usual attire. A black jacket over a beige turtleneck, plain black slacks and a puffy beige hat that rested atop his head. It may have been the same thing he wore every day, but that just made it even more important to have everything in perfect condition![break][break]
"Ok Swirly I have to go by myself for this and show my father that you are not a crutch I am perfectly capable of...Of going out there and..." He took a deep breath, the thought of traversing the densely populated campus without his soft sticky friend to keep him company causing anxiety to creep into his heart. But after a moment he would manage to steel himself, the pokemon looking almost surprised as a hint of determination entered into his gloomy expression. "I can do this. For once I can make him proud I just hope I left enough food for you." The towering student started to mutter under his breath as he made his way to the door, his hands balling into fists as he stood silently at the exit. Multiple minutes of quiet chatter to himself, the swirlix watching in silence the entire time. After a moment he would take a sharp breath and reach for the doorknob, pull the door open and duck his head down to slip out of the room. The first of many steps.[break][break]
Yoizuki walked as quickly as he could, which was not very fast despite his long legs. He had to be careful not to exert himself too much, as well as be mindful not to trip over himself and ruin his clothes before he got there. Yet he would still work up a sweat, more from the stress and anxiety than the walking itself. He could feel the eyes of his peers on him, judging him, quietly mocking him for his size that was too massive to ignore. But he would do everything within his power to ignore these thoughts, instead keeping himself focused on the path ahead and taking things one step at a time.[break][break]
He would arrive at the restaurant right on time, as signified by the beeping on his watch that went off just as he stepped in the door. He had walked to from his dorm to this exact location countless times in the time leading up to this meeting, timing himself each time to ensure to figure out exactly how long it would take him. It was more of a workout than he was used to, but it was worth it for this day. The corners of his lips twitched into a pathetic attempt at a smile as he looked down at the host, his hands clasped in front of him as he slouched forward to bring him ever so slightly closer to a more normal height. "Yes uh...Hello sir I am here for a reservation that has been made by a Dr. Haruyama and Yoizuki Haruyama for the two of us to come here. Together. To share a meal. Yes?"[break][break]
The host watched him for a moment, somewhat taken aback by the young man's unusual size and proportions. Fortunately he was far too professional to stare, simply nodding and gesturing for him to follow. "Yes, your date has arrived but moments ago. Right this way, sir." Yoizuki's brows pinched together in confusion, the man's phrasing raising a few questions. Date? Why would he call it a date? Perhaps that was just the way they said things here. Maybe every reservation was called a 'date' in a formal setting like this. Yes, that had to be it. No reason to start worrying.[break][break]
The bundled up student would be brought to a table where a young lady had already been seated, causing him to almost trip as he was more certainly sure that they were supposed to keep walking past this table. "Here we are! Have a seat and I'll be back in just a moment to take your orders." Yoizuki's eyes widened as he looked between Annalise and the waiter, his head shaking quickly as panic took over his expression. "No! I am very sorry sir but I believe that you have to be mistaken I am here for Dr. Haruyama and she is not Dr. Haruyama he is a much larger man with long hair surely you have seen him." He spoke without pause as he frantically tried to explain the situation. "Please take me to the correct table I can not keep my father waiting any longer, thank you."[break][break]

Lis had made a concentrated effort to be early, because, well to be honest she would have been wasting that time sitting around anyway overanalyzing. Overanalyzing, plotting, replotting, coming up with entire conversations in her head before discarding them for better revisions that still ultimately would probably not come up anyway. She'd almost brought her notebook to jot down said conversations honestly. As she sat there she started to wish she had at least brought a notebook. How did she expect to meet a fellow researcher and exchange notes and become lab partners or whatever her parents had planned for her if she didn't even bring her notes? Fool! A silly fool!
It was nearing the prescribed meeting point and Lis's anxiety began to rise, foot bouncing under the table and fingers fussing over her napkin. She ended up tearing the napkin half to shreds before Nora chirped an admonition to get her attention. The brunette jumped a little and sheepishly hid the napkin pieces in her jacket pocket, hunching a little in her chair and already forgetting her reminders to herself for her posture. What if she got stood up? It wasn't a date but it was a prearranged social gathering, which meant you could get stood up, right?
Lis's thoughts were racing at a tempo to make her busy by the time another host appeared, this time leading a man who, well, was far too tall to ever mistake as a boy. His face looked slightly gaunt, and definitely nervous, but young, she decided. Young, kind, and...oh dear, very distraught. Lis tried to give him a smile in return, pushing back her chair to stand up and take his hand. However, the young man rebuked her before she even got the chance to fully stand! Nora tilted her head curiously and the Noibat fluttered up onto Lis's shoulder to nuzzle her, reassuring her that it was not, in fact, her that was being rebuked.
"O-Oh....Y-you're Dr. Haruyama's son, I take it? I-......Oh gosh did our parents, uh, miscommunicate?" She fiddled with her jacket lining a little, grimacing. "To my knowledge, I'm here to meet Dr. Haruyama's son, a-as a sort of, uh, research colleague, uh, situation. I am-...I'm sorry if there was a misunderstanding...I'm, I mean, my parents--Drs. Pierre of Dendemille, uh, are colleagues of your father's and, uh, well they knew we went to the same school and p-probably had similar focuses and, uh......" Lis licked her lips, aware she was rambling. Nora nuzzled her again, sensing her discomfort.
The server looked between the very odd couple and tried his best to politely smile. "Sir, ma'am, the-uh...the reservation was most certainly for the two of you. Do you-...do you want to sit? Or, perhaps, relinquish the reservation? No need to.......make a scene..." He glanced toward Yoi, tall and agitated. Poor guy, Lis thought. He probably always got treated poorly like that.

[attr="class","wassupyoi1dangertxt"] Panicked eyes darted over to Anna as she spoke, the possibility that his worst fears were coming true starting to seem more and more likely. Could it be? Was he lied to? Was his father even actually here? As the girl spoke Yoizuki would stare in silence, tears starting to form in his eyes as it became more and more clear that this was in fact who he was meant to meet with. His father was not here. Of course he was not. He had far more important things to deal with than his silly mess of a son. It was so foolish to even think for a second that he would make a special trip just to come out to see him. At least he had a chance at getting an apology text from him later tonight.[break][break]
Despite the tears that started to slowly trail down his cheeks Yoizuki would put on a shaky smile, his lips trembling as his long fingers wrapped around his wrist. If it were not for his gloves one would be able to see his pale knuckles turn even whiter from the intensity of the grasp. He nodded quickly to the host, moving quickly and awkwardly to take his seat. "Y-yes sir I am so so sorry I was just a little caught off guard by the unexpected circumstances of my father not being here and everything. That is all." He could not bring himself to address the girl across from him yet, his stomach twisting into knots that he simply could not undo. He appeared to be completely lost in the situation, his eyes locked down at the table that seemed so far away even as he sat in the chair.[break][break]
His legs bent outward and folded into an almost cross legged formation, allowing him to just barely fit his legs under the table. Meanwhile his mind worked quickly to parse the situation and come to grips with the revelation, his head constantly shaking back and forth as he fought against the urge to deny the reality presented before him. With a deep breath he would force his words out, though his eyes would remain locked on the table as he did. "I apologize very very much that I am embarrassing you it seems that my... my father does not trust that I would meet with you and told me that he would be the one that I was meeting with not you. It-"[break][break]
His voice trembled as he did his best to hold back the tears, the urge to let them flow freely nearly overwhelming him. "You...You can go if you want that is fine I completely understand I am not what you were expecting so...O-or I could go so you can enjoy your meal in peace and I will just go back to the dorm and see if Swirly left enough food for me." Yet he could not bring himself to move from his seat. The moment he finished speaking he would tuck his lips into his mouth and clamp down on them as he waited patiently to be dismissed.

It wasn't as if Lis had many preconceived notions about how this would go. Sure, she had scenario upon scenario planned out in her head and like a choose-your-own-adventure or dichotomy tree of certain scale she had outcomes she'd mentally prepared for. But she hadn't thought there was one particular way this would go, and she certainly hadn't expected the young man she was meeting to burst into tears after being lured here on false pretenses. She was at least intuitive enough to not take it personally--it was clear he wasn't upset about her personally. After all, it wasn't as if it were a date that she'd prepared extensively for or something. (Not that she'd been on many of those either...)
Lis continued to awkwardly hover somewhere between her seat and fleeing as Yoi seated himself. He took a good deal of time to compose himself (poorly) while refusing to look at her, clenching his hands and looking like he wished he could collapse in on himself and disappear, like a dying star. Lis waited for him to stumble through his apology, feeling her anxiety and awkwardness somewhat melt in favor of damage control. These were clear, easy variables to diffuse--even if maybe she wasn't very skilled at it. How gut-wrenching it was to imagine not being close to her parents, to be lied to about seeing them. Lis's parents were her very best friends (besides Nora, who was--by the way--sitting atop the torn remains of Lis's napkin and watching Yoi with her head cocked to the side). How tragic to not have that relationship with them. She loved them dearly and trusted them explicitly! In this, she could not even fathom what he was feeling. A variable less easy to diffuse, then.
Lis sat down and stuck her hands in her pockets, finding the napkin scraps and further pulling them apart. "L-L.....Listen." A breath to compose herself. "I didn't--....I didn't have any, um....expectations here, except to perhaps meet Dr. Haruyama's son and, and maybe find a new colleague. Or..............friend." She almost breathed the last word, feeling horribly silly and embarrassed at herself when she did. Friends? She hadn't meant to say that. It was true, yes, but even she recognized not to say it. How very not....cool? Had she ever been cool? Ugh.
"I didn't--......Well, it doesn't...Um. It doesn't matter what I'm thinking right now to be honest. You seem really upset, and I'm-...I'm really sorry your father was dishonest to you. I very much enjoyed meeting him last summer, and it sounds like you are very fond of him. Can you...Can you tell me your name?" The brunette spoke like she was consoling a hurt child more than someone who was easily two feet taller than her. (Tiptoes simply would not cut it to whisper something in his ear, maybe even if he were sitting and she were standing.) "My name is, um, Annalise Pierre. But you can call me Lis. An-and this is Nora! I know you mentioned Swirly, is that your-your Pokemon?" Out of napkin to mangle, her hands found the pristine tablecloth and began to idly twist and tug at it, jostling her water glass just a little.

[attr="class","wassupyoi1dangertxt"] It was amazing, really. The poor girl had no expectations, yet she was still disappointed. It was obvious to him even as she tried to hide it. Her discomfort was clear, his unusual appearance already making her uneasy in his presence. She struggled with her words, likely trying to dance around his obvious faults to avoid hurting his feelings. Her attempts at being peaceable were appreciated, but that did not make the perceived subtext of her words sting any less. She couldn't even voice her thoughts, instead focusing on how she felt bad that he was upset. As always it seemed that pity was the only response that he could get out of people, a sad reality that he had come to accept years ago.[break][break]
Still, at least this pain was a familiar one. Something that could distract him from the trick that his father had played to get him to show up there today. It was enough to help him pull in one last shaky breath as a gloved hand moved to wipe at his eyes. The fabric absorbed the moisture as they had countless times before, clearing his vision and allowing him to look over to the girl seated across from him. Though getting a good look at her would only serve to further lower his confidence in this situation. She was a beautiful young lady, someone who clearly had far more value to the school than he did in every way. How dare he waste her time like this?[break][break]
Yet she would attempt to continue the conversation, Yoizuki's lips pressing into a flat line as he watched her with a clearly distressed expression. He almost looked frightened of her as he pushed his words out. "Y-Yoizuki Haruyama." He could barely get the words to leave his throat, but in the end, his tongue feeling thick in his mouth as he struggled to maintain this semblance of composure he had managed to muster. "Swirly is my pokemon yes a darling little Swirlix but unfortunately I did not bring her with me though I wish I did she is very sweet but I wanted to-" He cut himself off, his teeth clicking together as he suddenly clamped his jaw shut. No, she did not need to hear his shame and he did not need to think about his father at this moment. Just...focus on the present.[break][break]
"R-really Ms. Pierre you do not have to stay here with me if you do not want to I appreciate your words but really I am more than willing to go home if you would rather enjoy this meeting in peace or maybe you could invite a friend I am sure they do not care who you eat with as the reservation has already been made so..." His lungs emptied in a heavy sigh, his shoulders drooping as his hands relaxed and rested limply in his lap. This whole situation was already exhausting him, making him dread the long walk home where he would be left with nothing but his thoughts. "I am sorry I talk too much."

Lis watched this man seemingly stumble through the stages of grief over his father’s betrayal, his posture and mannerisms indicating he was stuck firmly between “bargaining” and “depression.” Bargaining to diffuse by not “bothering” Lis, depression emanating from him in waves. (How often the two seemed to go hand in hand in life, actually; nothing about the Kübler-Ross model said you couldn’t have multiple stages at once, after all.) How many times had this man’s father let him down like this? It made Lis’s heart ache, again quelling her own shaking in favor of minimizing the trembling mountain in front of her. It really was unfortunate that he didn’t have his Pokemon with him—anything to help soothe him would be good.
At that moment the waiter broke in to pour Yoi’s water and refill hers. He started to ask if they were ready to order but was skilled enough in people reading skills to defer on taking orders. Perhaps he’d had enough disastrous dates in this room to know when to butt in and when to let things resolve (or dissolve) and just come to pick up the pieces. Perhaps he knew their benefactor didn’t care about bills, or perhaps he figured they’d be out of his section to make way for a new table more quickly if he didn’t bother them. Either way, the ice tinkled in Lis’s glass as she grabbed it and fidget-sipped it, smiling politely around it at him.
As Yoi apologized—and reapologized, and rereapologized—Lis felt something akin to anger stir in her stomach. It wasn’t anger at Yoi, really, but the systems and treatment by people that had made this person so beat down and miserable. Something inside her, perhaps more subconsciously than an active decision of mercy, friendship, or consequence, resolved at that moment to do her damndest to help him. Not fix him, per say, but at the very least some form of emotional rehabilitation. Was Lis, queen of stunted emotional literacy, the person to be taking this on? Probably not, but then, here was a living breathing nuanced human being presenting a challenge, a puzzle. Who knew was wonders of intellectual prowess were locked behind barriers of being unable to speak up for himself, being able to express his needs or thoughts or demand the space to explore his curiosities? Who knew what curiosities were being stunted by needing to apologize at every turn, for that matter?
Oh no. This wasn’t pity. This was a social experiment. For the greater good of science! (The notion that it was because she wanted to be his friend was not something she was emotionally equipped to properly verbalize. It wasn’t that she was using him, only that she didn’t know how to ask for what she wanted. The blind leading the blind on this one, honestly.)
Shaking her head and swallowing her stutter (for the sake of science!), Lis gave him a smile. “Listen, Yoizuki. My plans for the evening involve sitting here with you. That’s all. I can’t ‘enjoy a meeting in peace’ if it’s just me or the person I came to meet leaves. If you want to leave, that’s fine. You can. But I’m interested in getting to know you.” A pause and uncomfortable shift (while Nora looked between the two of them with some degree of confusion at her sudden resolve, which seemed to flicker and sputter in the silence). Then, “B-but…I won’t keep you here if you don’t want to be. I mean, you were lied to about why you were coming, a-and that’s…well, that’s rude to you. So if you want to go back to campus, I won’t blame you. B-but if we’re spending our time here together, I’d-….I’d like it to be just us (well, a-and Nora, I guess). And that means not apologizing for being here. If we’re here, we’re here, you know? Let’s not-…not waste it with that.”
Her social moxie exhausted in one grand flourish, Lis settled down in her own chair a little, fidgeting with the hem of her jacket as she blushed. Blushing? What an emotional outburst. She could say it was just for the sake of being efficient that she’d made such a speech but then why was she blushing?!
(Nora was looking infuriatingly amused.)
Awkwardly grabbing the menu and picking it up so it halfway obscured her sunk-down postured self, Lis bit her lip and clicked her tongue a little. “What are you……h-hoping to get out of the a-academy, then?”

[attr="class","wassupyoi1dangertxt"] The moment she told him to listen Yoizuki would be all ears, following orders intently despite his strong desire to simply get up and walk away before her words could humiliate him any further. He looked ashamed as she spoke, as if the smile on her face only deepened his guilt. This poor girl was wasting so much time and energy on extending pity to him, something he was most certainly not deserving of. It was very sweet and he truly appreciated the effort, but he simply found it impossible to believe that she was truly interested in getting to know him. Of course he could just say that. Calling her out on this matter would only make the situation more difficult, so instead he would simply accept her with words with a nod and a melancholy expression.[break][break]
Yet again the option was given to go back to the campus, a wonderful notion that he wished with all of his heart he could follow through with. But the more he thought about it the more he knew it was not the best course of action. His father could very well ask how the meeting went, and he wasn't about to lie or tell him that he simply ran away. There was surely a lot of effort and money put into this arrangement so it would be rude to his father to not see it through. Oh and of course it would be rude to leave this girl, even if she would have been better off if he did. No matter where he looked for justification to escape this dreadful situation every result came back in favor of staying. It seemed he had no choice but to resign himself to his fate.[break][break]
"Y-yes. Yes I will stay." He nodded again to reaffirm his decision, his hands still clasped together as he did his best to make eye contact with his partner for the evening. Unfortunately the best he could do was stare at her nose, but at least he was looking in her general direction. "I truly appreciate your graciousness in dealing with this situation please order whatever you like I am sure that my father would want you to enjoy this as much as you can he is really a very good man." As he spoke he would take the menu in his long, shaky fingers and use it to distract himself. His eyes rapidly moved across the listed dishes, though his mind would be too busy processing the situation and the things surrounding it to actually pay attention to what he was reading.[break][break]
Everything came in his mind would come to a sudden halt as she posed her question, his eyes nervously glancing up at her over the menu before pulling themselves back down. "Oh...Nothing. I just want to learn things, that is all. I have some ideas but they aren't really anything worth discussing so I will just try to learn whatever I can from the professors and maybe come up with something worthwhile." His index finger anxiously tapped against the menu, the menu hiding the anxiety that was painted all over his face. He should say something in return, right? His mother always told him that trying to have a conversation with him was like pulling teeth. He owed Lis a better experience than that. "...B-but I am sure that your studies are far more interesting are you learning battle performance or the sciences I am sure that you must be very talented to be approved for Sinnoh Elite Academy." It may not have been stated, but he was knowing his father he wouldn't have arranged this meeting unless she was going to be one of his peers.
