With a lazy breeze, the clouds shuffled along well-worn paths;
their destinations were known only to them and the westerly winds as they provided their intermittent shade at no cost. Peaceful and with purpose, they crept along without threatening any rain or snow, making it a fine day to spend some time outside. Several of the students at SEA were doing just so, and it seemed like everyone was trying to hammer out as much enjoyment now as possible. This was understandable, as the new school year would be starting that Monday and everyone wanted to cram as much free time in as possible before everyone hit the grindstone.
With a small flick, Dahlia checked her phone. Two o'clock on the fifth of September, 2020, with a possibility of light precipitation much later that night. Replacing the phone back into its home in her jacket, she turned her attention to the real reason she was out here - her growing Budew, who was currently standing around like a small green blob as he finished off a pre-prepared snack. This was regular before a bit of exercise, as mandated by their regiment. If Aramis didn't get his regularly scheduled physical exertion, the whole week could be thrown off.
"Alright, Aramis. As before you shall begin with your stretches, to keep your bulbs limber. They shall be fine and blossomed limbs in the future, and we must ensure that you'll be in peak condition once your body undergoes the evolutionary change." A light clap as she tapped her fingers to her palm in a slight rhythm, and with a 1-2-3-4 the little grass-type raises his appendages to the sky and then relaxed them; Aramis was eager to please his uniformed trainer as she stood before the bench.
This venture wasn't the only one going on around the grounds as far as Pokemon training and enrichment went, but it surely was the quietest in the vicinity as young adults hustled on by with Staryubucks and packed bags aplenty.

A soft smile of amusement graced the dark skinned young man's face as he slowly wandered the campus grounds. It was truly entertaining to watch the other students go about their business. Some of them tried to squeeze in their last bits of training in a desperate bid of getting the leg up on the competition. Others would take this as a last moment of freedom before the endless hours of crunch time that were sure to follow. And then there was Frederick, who seemed perfectly content to simply walk about the campus and watch the busy combees buzz about. Meanwhile Tiny's small feet moved quickly to keep up with his trainer's much longer strides. As he did his ears would remain alert, his the long ovals twitching every which way to pick up all the sounds of the campus.[break][break]
Oddly enough it wasn't the shouting or sounds of battle that caught the pokemon's ears, as these noises were all around him. Instead what would make him stop in his tracks was a faint whisper carried by the wind, something that would have been easily drowned out by all but the most finely tuned of ears. Large eyes narrowed as his steps came to a halt, his nose fidgeting as he turned to look in the direction of the sound with a soft 'niiii. Frederick's steps would slow to a stop as well, his brows raising slightly as he looked down at his pokemon. It wasn't too much of a surprise to see him behaving this way, as he was always curious to explore not just the loudest sound, but the most curious.[break][break]
Frederick slid his thumbs behind his suspenders as he gave the pokemon a nod, his shoulders shaking as he silently laughed to himself. "Very well, Tiny. Lead the way." Without even acknowledging his trainer the scrappy little nidoran would scurry off toward the rhythmic tapping, something about the pattern demanding investigation in the pink pokemon's mind. It wasn't too long before the trainer would see what had captivated his pokemon, his head tilting to one side as he took a moment to examine the figure and her pokemon. A very properly dressed woman calmly putting her pokemon through a well practiced exercise, exactly the sort of thing he expected to see in such an esteemed institution.[break][break]
His pace slowed slightly, allowing his pokemon to scurry on ahead while he took a moment to smooth out his lavender necktie. "Remember, do not engage these pokemon without permission. We aren't in the wilderness anymore." A soft grunt could be heard from the nidoran as it closed the gap between himself and the snow haired student. After taking a moment to run his hands through his hair and make sure his uniform was in tip top shape Frederick would follow in suit, his thumbs slipping back behind his suspenders as he moved up behind his partner. The large eared rodent would stare up at Dahlia, his eyes narrowed as he watched her in silence.[break][break]
"You'll have to excuse my friend here. It seems that your training exercises have caught his attention." The moment his rushed steps would come to a stop behind his pokemon Fred would bend at the waist, offering a slight bow to the lady. "Frederick Ferdinand and my companion Tiny, at your service." Lips would curl into a warm smile as his posture straightened, dark gaze shifting between Dahlia and Aramis. "That's quite the peculiar stretch you have going here! I imagine it must serve a very specific purpose. Would it be rude of me to ask what it's nature might be?" His lips peeled back into a slight grin as his eyes would settle on Dahlia's, a brief pleased slipping through his lips as he did. "Though if that is a trade secret I would be more than happy to settle for a name."

The interruption wasn't expected,
as all interruptions are wont to be, much like a bus announcing its arrival can be an intrusion upon a peaceful ride. The Nidoran entering into their small training area called for a stop to her tapping, and thus followed the trainer. At least his manners held up, giving her a moment to hold a hand up and pause Aramis in returning to her side for the immediate moment.
A polite smile was offered along with a nod of her head at both Frederick and the Pokemon. "A pleasure, Frederick. You may refer to me as Dahlia Lancaster." Unless he was intimately familiar with the breeding business, the name would just blend in and wash away. She was just another young woman attending the school who happened to have caught his attention with her... how did he call it, stretch?
"I assume you are familiar with the progression of Budew into Roselia? A tell-tale sign of excellent health in Roselia is the aroma and health of the blooms in their hands; a healthy and vibrant flower can only result from care and time. To ensure that health, Aramis is performing stretches to keep his future limbs in excellent condition." It was all spoken very matter-of-factly, as this was her area of expertise. "The excellent care of a Pokemon begins in the everyday, after all. If Aramis wishes to be the best, we will have to keep him on track each and every day to do so."
Dahlia's attention turned from her own Pokemon to Tiny; a switch seemed to flip for a brief moment as she tried her best to take in as many little details as possible to judge, to observe, to take it all in. How was his overall horn health? The claws? Was his complexion a healthy hue for a Poison-type, did his ears seem appropriate and perky and observant?
"I'm sure you have your own style of doing things with Tiny here, of course?"

Dahlia Lancaster. Lancaster. For some reason this name rang as important, something he had seen or heard before. Frederick had tried to keep up to date on the most recent inter-regional news and happenings but it didn't feel like he had heard that name from there. He would maintain his calm expression as his mind raced to try and recall where he had seen this name featured before. Unfortunately he didn't have too much time or brainpower to dedicate to this at the moment, as he had focus on the conversation he had gotten himself into. His head bobbed as he listened carefully to her explanation, his lips pursing slightly in intrigue as he looked down at the small bud pokemon.[break][break]
The woman's explanation made plenty of sense. It was best to get this sort of training done early so that they would have a solid foundation upon evolution, a training tidbit he picked up from his mother. His features would turn tense for a moment, the recollection of his mother somehow bringing the answer to his previous query closer to the tip of his tongue. The moment would fade as quickly as it came, serving as only a twitch to his soft neutral expression. "Wise words, to be sure." His gaze would follow hers down to his petite nidoran, the corner of his lip tugging upward as he quickly examined his pokemon. The toxic rabbit would continue to stare up at Dahlia with a blank expression, save for the constant bit of irritability that remained constant in his eyes. A low growl would start to hum from his throat as his eyes met the woman's, only for it to quiet down as he felt his trainer's attention fall to him as well.[break][break]
The nidoran was noticeably smaller than your average pokemon of his species, standing at maybe one foot three inches in total. His coloration was strong, the fur a deep rich purple while the insides of his ears had a vibrant teal coloration. Even his teeth were a sparkly white, looking as if they were brushed on a regular basis. However the darker spots on his fur were splotchy, forming no sort of interesting pattern or having any sort of style to them. Despite his small body his horn was surprisingly large, even slightly bigger than that of a nidoran of average size. If this pokemon was the result of a breeder's efforts, which there was evidence to support, it was most certainly destined for battle rather than show. Yet it was so small that it looked more like it was suited to be a house pet than a fighter. The only thing that could be certain was that he was well groomed and cared for by a trained hand, with all the signs of a healthy diet and proper hygiene.[break][break]
As she examined his pokemon Frederick would turn his attention to her eyes, his smile growing slightly as he watched her steel colored gaze shift about the various aspects of his partner. She seemed trained and refined in her examination, her gaze shifting between the various key points to be analyzed to discern the quality of a pokemon. It was intriguing to witness to say the least. He would wait before answering, his attention locked on the girl's face as he watched here with great interest. After the pause he would let out a soft laugh, his attention turning back to Tiny's still form as he gave his suspenders a slight tug. "Ah, yes! I feel it's important for one to train every aspect of their pokemon to ensure that they develop properly, both physically and mentally." His head would tilt slightly to one side as he looked back to Dahlia with a curious look in his eye, a hand moving to stroke his chin as he continued. "I would elaborate, but I'm far too curious of your assessment. What do you see in my spikey friend here?"[break][break]

Dahlia missed his momentary tension,
at least for what it truly was; she could only assume that it was from nerves from approaching her. No, Dahlia passed it off for everyday stress and kept her focus on the poisonous rodent, finally coming to a conclusion in her brief examination.
Aramis would intrude as Dahlia collected her thoughts, simply waddling closer to get within a conversational zone of Tiny and chirp. It wouldn't be much beyond a polite hello, something he's been instructed and drilled to do as best Dahlia could. In fact, if Tiny responded in any way that wasn't cordial politeness, Aramis would immediately shiver and make a dash for his trainer's ankles to seek refuge and hide away from any level of aggression or rudeness. He simply had no spine, poor thing.
"Your Nidoran is clearly cared for, with attention to detail to the key biological factors - excellent incisors, a strong poison barb, and a clean coat. It makes it clear that his size isn't indicative of diet, but simply a factor of biology or some other factor. Outside of that, he seems fine. I'd need to know more about him - like his pedigree - to give you a stronger opinion." It was all rattled off matter-of-factly, an emotionless voice as she pointed and indicated at Tiny from her seat.
Now her attention was back to the good sir Frederick. "Evolution might see a change in some factors - such as size - but otherwise I'd expect a healthy Nidoran for any Pokemon use. Does he see frequent battling, or is Tiny more of a domestic partner?" As she spoke, she finally felt that this conversation was going to go somewhere productive and indicated for him to take a seat on the bench with her, for better conversational comfort.

Tiny's gaze would flick over to the bud as he approached, his hard gaze following him from the moment he started toward him. The nidoran's nose would twitch, eyes narrowing just a bit as he approached and threatened to invade the rabbit's personal space. He looked down on the little pokemon, perhaps even in equal parts literal and metaphorical. It was obvious that he wasn't too interested in what the pokemon had to say, a notion that was further confirmed by his response to the attempt at a polite greeting. The nidoran would let out an irritable grunt, the needles on his body shifting slightly as they threatened to bristle. A soft snort of victory would escape his nostrils as Aramis fled to hide behind his trainer in a rather pathetic display. With that out of the way Tiny would turn his attention back to the women who drew his attention initially, listening carefully as she appraised him.[break][break]
The subject of her assessment would let out a quiet grunt as she mentioned his size, his posture straightening to give him that extra quarter inch of height. He knew all too well that evolution was the key to his success. He wasn't small, he was just saving up all his energy for evolution. Surely then he would be the biggest Nidorino the world had ever seen. Meanwhile Frederick would respond with an entertained grin, his brows raising slightly as he nodded in agreement with her words. "His pedigree is fine as well, I assure you. He comes from a line of accomplished Nidokings and Nidoqueens that have served their caretakers very well over the years." Tiny's chest would puff with pride as he spoke, though any noble appearance he may have taken on was marred by the irritable expression he simply couldn't wipe from his face.[break][break]
"Would it be cheating to call him a domestic partner who sees frequent battling? We are a team, he and I. I take care of him and he takes care of me, the most simple yet one of the most powerful bond two creatures can have" His head would bow in acknowledgement as he spoke, his steps leading him toward the bench to set himself beside her. Once he was sat he would move to rest his ankle on his thigh and clasp his hands together, his gaze leaving Dahlia as he took a moment to ensure his clothing was still in order after shifting positions. Once everything was confirmed to be pristine he would turn his attention back to the breeder. Wait...breeder?[break][break]
Of course.. His mother had read countless articles on the Lancasters and their breeding techniques. Their name had come up many times in the literature he browsed through when he wasn't busy with his studies and training. Could this be the heiress to the Lancaster legacy? For the moment he would keep the revelation to himself, as the conversation seemed to be going just fine without that bit of knowledge coming into play. "I have to admit, your ability to so quickly and skillfully analyze pokemon is very impressive. May I assume that you are here to study breeding?"

Aramis could appreciate nothing for now,
having lost his nerve in front of one so small. Tiny was aptly named, but even so he still had the personality of a big and brave - if not overblown - creature and that was more than Aramis. Thus he was content to peek out from behind the legs and observe and watch and wait to see if the Nidoran would soften up enough to be approachable.
A provable pedigree would earn points in favor of the Nidoran! Dahlia only wished she could see the full line of data herself. Observations on the horns of the Nidoqueens would prove most valuable indeed... but that was for another day, if ever. She had to be an adult human being for now, and pull away from that analytic part of herself long enough to be polite.
"It would not be cheating. If Tiny fulfills such an all-encompassing role, then so be it." A shift to place both of her hands politely upon her legs, turning her body ever so slightly towards Fred. "I only ask become many make the distinction; there are those Pokemon companions that serve a better place in a domestic setting, and those that are better suited for the natural competition all Pokemon strive for. Aramis, for example, is not a battling compatriot." A simple pat-pat-pat in a rhythm, and Aramis popped out from under the bench to stand at attention near her feet.
"I am here to further my career in the breeding world, yes. I am going to breed Pokemon worthy of the front page - the champions, the show stoppers, the very best of the best. Aramis here is my first success and continual study in doing so; by all biological accounts, he is a prime example of his kind. That is the kind of quality I want attached to my name, and the quality education to match it and back me up on paper can only be found here." As she spoke, she seemed to drift off to somewhere else in her aspirations, looking to the horizon to see a future where she could show nothing but high pride in her work.
Back to the bench to draw her gaze to Fred. "May I inquire about your field of study, sir?"

Frederick would nod along with her words, a thoughtful hum rumbling from his throat as he listened carefully. As respectable as her professionalism was it was hard to ignore the coldness of her words. There was absolutely no emotion showing through her words, each and every comment and answer stated as pure fact with no feeling behind them. She didn't even inject any sort of opinion into her responses, yet her conversational partner didn't seem to be bothered by this in the very least. He seemed to be completely engrossed in her words, soaking in every little bit with an air of calm cheer. Not only was she a prominent student that he would need to keep an eye on, she was proving to be someone that would be quite interesting to get to know going forward.[break][break]
"A fair point. Pokemon are as diverse as humans, after all. Just as we all have our talents and specialties it only makes sense for pokemon to be the same. I'm sure I don't have to mention to you how two pokemon of the same species can serve drastically different purposes based on their natures and natural abilities." Frederick leaned forward as he spoke, leaning forward to scratch Tiny behind his ears as he did. The pokemon would glare daggers at the man, yet his needles would remain flat against his skin. The only sign of movement was a slight twitching his hind leg, a sight that would prompt a soft laugh from his trainer as he pulled away and shifted his focus back to Dahlia.[break][break]
So, this was what the perfect budew looked like. His mother may have been able to confirm such a claim, but unfortunately all Frederick could do was take the young lady's word for it. "A good start to what I'm sure is to be a fine legacy. I'm honored to witness this prize winning pokemon so early in his career." His smile grew slightly as he watched her trail off, her gaze turning off into the distance. Perhaps she was visualizing her career and the great things she would accomplish. Or maybe her words were a reminder of the pressure that her family name put onto her shoulders. Either way he wouldn't interrupt her moment, watching her quietly as he waited for her to resume the conversation.[break][break]
Frederick would tug at the sleeves of his dress shirt, letting out another soft chuckle once the question was posed. "Oh, I'm afraid my field of study isn't nearly as interesting as yours. If everything goes as planned I won't be finding myself on any sort of front page, raising any champions or stopping any shows. I'm just another hopeful soul pursuing a career in law enforcement." He would pause, a hint of playfulness entering into his expression as an amusing thought seemed to enter into his mind. "Though I suppose as a ranger I may end up butting a stop to some form of illegal or unethical pokemon performances. So maybe I will be a show stopper after all."
Frederick could be considered a charmer; he at least glazed honey over his words to make them palatable and keep the conversation smooth. Insightful Dahlia didn't pick up on any ulterior, so it was fine and welcome. His agreement on her assessments and goals was to be expected, as far as she was concerned. She was right and that was that; anything contrary to such a line of thought was unnecessary. [break][break]
She wasn't... surprised by his career choice. Curious, perhaps, since he didn't immediately strike her as material for the force. Pokemon Rangers were solitary types in her brief run-ins with them; interpol was the general league-sanctioned power you dealt with, and then there were any local forces when required... perhaps Frederick was much better in the wilderness than his first impression gave. If anything, he cleaned up well; he had not the stink of nature upon him. [break][break]
"Admirable and adventurous. That is a profession guaranteed to keep you busy. One hopes that you end up somewhere favorable; I can't imagine being shuffled off to the Unovan desert or the Sinnoh north would be pleasant for long-term work. I'm sure Tiny would appreciate a temperate environment as well, hmm?" The last part of the line was directed at the Nidoran, much like someone might query a family dog on if they wanted to be pet; just an attempt to be social. [break][break]
With a small shift, she picked Aramis up and placed him gently upon her lap, stroking the side of his form to soothe him of his Tiny fears. "I suppose a number of our classmates will also be of your career path; I've seen a few applicants here for the force already. It seems like this institution provides excellent credentials for those who want to be the best in their field."

Tiny's stare toward Dahlia would remain constant without a hint of curiosity or suspicion to his eyes. He simply watched as if he were waiting for something to happen that he was neither excited for nor concerned about. His ears twitched slightly as she addressed him, his head turning upward slightly as she turned in his direction. Frederick would shake his head, his gaze turning away from the conversation to look off into the distance. There was a certain passionate look in his eye as his smile gained strength, his lips parting slightly to reveal his pearly whites. "I am willing to go wherever the wind takes me. Justice must be done in every part of the world, even the unpleasant places. Tiny and I are prepared to deal with whatever environment we must suffer through. So long as we can keep busy, as you put it." The nidoran let out a soft grunt at that, though it was difficult to tell if it was out of distaste or agreement.[break][break]
Attention would turn back to the silver haired breeder, his expression relaxing back to it's previous state as the conversation turned to his peers. There were many different forms of law enforcement that seemed to flock to this school, all of which were endlessly entertaining to witness. "Of course. If one truly wants to do good in the world it only makes sense for them to strive to be the best. The amount one can do is limited by their skills and training after all." His thumbs slipped behind his suspenders once more as his eyes turned to the various other first years getting ready for the beginning of the school year. So many fresh faces eager to make a name for themselves...[break][break]
"Unfortunately I suspect that the majority of my fellow law enforcement hopefuls aren't fully aware of what they're getting in to. Growing up in such a peaceful world there's relatively few who have come into contact with the more foul elements that they are being protected from. Of course I hope that they prosper, but I imagine a number of them will be shifting their focus to more League focused majors." His words were calm and measured, lacking any sort of disdain or disapproval toward the people he referenced. He even maintained his smile throughout, which remained strong even as he pushed a sigh through his nostrils and shrugged his shoulders. "But I am curious to see who survives either of our courses. I hear that the professors are a tough bunch to impress."
