Despite her slight frame, Layla loved to eat. No one knew where all the food went, although a few close friends make remarks that would've earned ire if they were from anyone else. However, they weren't here. She came by her lonesome, aside from a fluffy cotton-ball that she loved dearly.

Lunch was the most cherished part of the day, by far. None made complaint, nor fuss over the food they ate. Layla wished her tray was piled higher than what it was. She didn't need a mountain of food, merely a molehill.

Moreover, there was one other thing that she needed; someone to sit with, especially before cliques formed, friendships cemented, and it got awkward to jump into something established. For once, Layla used her lateness and disorganization to her advantage. The fact that everyone sits down to eat made it an even playing ground for the pint-sized pinkette to find anyone sitting by their lonesome, or in a duo if she had the desire.

Layla surveyed the cafeteria. There were surprisingly few people in there; maybe there was an extra class she forgot to sign up for. Even still, there was one person of the small group in the cafeteria by herself. She seemed stern, but that wouldn't be able to dissuade the social freshman.

Tray in hand, she walked over, heels lightly clicked against the tiled floor. "Hey!" politely greeting the sole student. "Mind if I sit here?"

The day had all around gone as Alex had expected. She and Mordre got up with the sun, went for a jog, showered, had some breakfast, attended the slew of morning classes she had signed up for, and now they were working to take a breather and have lunch. They had a full afternoon of classes today as well. Alex was not one to do things in half measures. Her workload she took on in high school had landed her as valedictorian – she wouldn’t be surprised if her voluntary workload here at least earned her a graduation with honors when the time came.

To supplement that workload, even though her lunch was meant to be a breather period, Alex was still reading over some of her prior classes’ syllabi. She wanted to commit the details to memory and get a head start on some of the required reading she would need to do. So wrapped up in her reading, she barely even paid attention to the salad she periodically shoveled bites of into her mouth. Mordre on the other hand, was looking around at all the people and Pokemon in the cafeteria as she ate. The Mawile had snagged her usual midday treat of a mocha and cinnamon roll. Normally Alex made her eat normal “healthy” foods, but the tanned Kalosian was too busy with studying her papers to pay too much attention to what she snagged. Dinner time would be a different matter, so she was going to enjoy lunch. She was at least using a fork and knife to eat the pastry, so there was something to be said for the fairy’s behavior.

When the pinkette arrived at the table, her query brought Alex’s attention away from her papers for a few moments at least. “Bonjour,” idly motioning toward one of the empty seats at the table she gave a slight shake of her head, clearly focused more on the papers in her hand still, “Zat is fine.” With that, she stuffed another bite of salad in her mouth and her attention was locked back on the syllabus in her hand. Mordre just gave her a flat look, not surprised in the least before giving the newcomer a small wave and apologetic smile. Sometimes she felt like her partner was the one that needed lessons on how to behave.

As Layla took a seat, she took note of what the... Kalosian? She'd never met one before. But, yeah, what the Kalosian student was doing? Studying at break? Really? Layla took her studies seriously too, but you never bring work with you when you are supposed to relax. It just makes everything messy, you never unwind, and you'd never be able to really enjoy the delicious food that the cafeteria pumps out daily.

Fluffee, the adorable cotton-ball that she was, had already wolfed down whatever Layla had grabbed for her, almost off the tray. Nearly anything sweet or processed was vacuumed off the platter like a Garbodour chasing trash before she even set it on the table. She pursed her lips, not quite sure what do to, aside from cry internally as the only thing she had left was the leafy greens and an apple.

Layla distracted herself by looking almost curiously at the tanned student. She seemed stern, but that didn't mean she wasn't social, although sitting by yourself and studying didn't exactly rule that possibility out. Well, she may as well link whatever she was doing to the conversation or something along those lines.

Another query brought Alex’s attention away from the papers she was so intently reading. It was somewhat annoying, but she remained polite – she hadn’t even noticed the previous look her partner had given her for being so focused on the syllabi. “Ze syllabi from my morning classes,” taking a sip of water to help wash her salad down, she continued on after a short breath, “I want to be well prepared for ze work required in zem, and ‘ave plenty of time to study ze required readings as well.”

Was she a work-a-holic? Yes, yes she was. Her career choice after graduation would be filled with work and effort, so she thought it was best to get accustomed to such workloads now instead of flailing about trying to get used to it after starting the job. Being well prepared for any situation was the best way to assure success – and a good way to impress the ones you had to answer to down the road as well.

Mordre sometimes missed the more easy-going attitude Alex had when they were a good deal younger, but that was also a time before she got to enjoy battling. She had learned to put up with her partner’s special brand of eccentricity as it seemed to go hand-in-hand with their increased battles. With her mind drifting toward her preferred pastime, the Mawile stared curiously at the pink haired woman’s Cottonee. She didn’t look like she would prove to be much of an actual enjoyable challenge to overcome in battle. Unlike Tiny, this Pokemon just seemed to be the type that just wanted to have fun in far more trivial ways. Maybe in an actual battle it’d prove otherwise, but for now Mordre didn’t put the fluff ball on her list of challenges to look forward to.

Layla paused with curious intent. “Ah yeah… Which class was that for?” starting to pick at the meal she placed in front of herself, keen to start a conversation. “I’m in something about how Pokémon natures affect their physiology,” putting a spoonful of soup in her mouth. She flinched- it was still way too hot, and she very nearly burned herself. It wasn’t fun, but it might have even looked comical to onlookers, her frantic attempts to get it down, followed with a chaser of water. Exciting.

After a cough and beating her chest, seeking to free whatever lingering burn there was, she continued. “L-like how some personalities, across the board, are faster while not being able to hit as hard, and stuff.” She blew on her soup, before trying to take in another spoonful. Better, but it went across the pre-made burns. Layla gave it a rest not long after that. She took a second to recover with another sip of water.

Fluffee noticed, however, Mordre’s rather dismissive look. What is was for, she didn’t know, nor did she care. A random Pokémon’s opinion didn’t rank too highly, but that also didn’t matter. Whoever Layla liked, Fluffee had to like their Pokémon too, or at least try to. A friendly, but cautionary wave made its way to the steely Mawile. Whatever may be, she’d at least make an effort.
